Bump Keys Looking Forward

This year, 2010, has been the year of the the bump key. It appears there is no chance the bump key will fade away. Pop culture has recently caught the drift of our skill and have started show episodes where the main characters use bump keys to their advantage. Bravo for them! Bump keys, when used correctly, can be a real time saver.

When to use a bump key

Under the right circumstances, a lock can be bumped in as about 11 seconds (by a a pre-teen no less). The perfect scenario would be one where entrance into the building was not time critical. Say if the building was on fire you would NOT bump the lock. I'd suggest using the most reliable way to gain entry into the building ...using blunt force. The problem arises when an individual is under pressure as Lock bumping becomes increasingly more difficult with every 'jitter'.
There are certain instances when using a bump key makes perfect sense. Say, for example, you're called out on a lockout job. No worries. You have time. Take your time and pull out your bump key set, find the proper bump key, and start whacking away. It doesn't matter if it takes a few extra seconds to 'bump'. The important thing is that you've just saved yourself the hassle of trying to pick the lock or using a shim.
